Вальтер Скотт написал поэму "Дева Озера". На английском. Шуберт написал свою песню на фрагмент этой поэмы в переводе на его родной немецкий. Этот фрагмент называется "Ellens Gesang III" ("Третья песня Эллен"). В Собрании сочинений В. Скотта можно прочитать эту поэму на русском в переводе Т. Сильман.
