They were 'just' some calm demo runs but it was totally crazy hearing that screaming V12, echoing all around the mountains during the 2022 Bernina Gran Turismo. And you can also enjoy how the P72 prototype sounds like from the inside driven by De Tomaso's development driver, Hugo de Sadeleer, with De Tomaso's chairman Norman Choi on the passenger seat! Recording and seeing not one but two De Tomaso P72s was definitely one of my highlights from the recent International St. Moritz Automobile Week. It was also really great to chat with Norman, Hugo and Jowyn Wong, the designer of the P72, who were all so kind and available to allow me to fix my GoPro inside the cockpit of one of their P72s.
The two cars shown in this video are still the prototypes like the red one unvelied in Goodwood during the 2019 Festival of Speed. These prototypes share a lot with the Apollo Intensa Emozione, from which the engine also comes: a 6.3-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine able to produce around 780hp. The actual development mule is instead powered by a 5.0-litre Roush supercharged Ford Coyote V8 engine which should be fitted on the 72 production cars (with the exception of last minutes surprises..).
Bernina Gran Turismo is an event born in 2014 with the aim of keep the memory of the legendary Bernina hillclimb race of 1929 and 1930 alive. It's held on the beautiful Bernina Pass in Switzerland, on a section of the original route specifically closed to traffic, with the hilclimb course starting from La Rösa (1,871 m above sea level) and ending up on the actual Bernina Pass (2,328 m) after a total of 5.9 km. Back to those years this competition was part of the International St. Moritz Automobile Week, which consisted of a rally, the kilometer race, a skill race, a concours d'elegance and, as a conclusion, the hillclimb race. Since 2021 BGT's organizers decided to celebrate the whole International St. Moritz Automobile Week of those two years with a selection of events which recalled the original ones.
